Scytalidium cuboideum spalting starter packet containing live, dormant Scytalidium cuboideum spores. Created when your order is received, this fungus will require an average 30 days time for the fungus to colonize the spalting starter material in the sealed bag and be ready for use.

Calling all wood crafters! With this spalting starter, now anyone can spalt their own wood with fungi. Create and control stunning color and lasting character in green wood or rehydrated wood by using natural wood spalting and fungal pigmentation, without chemical stains or paint.

With this purchase you'll also receive my e-book called Spalting Your Own Wood With Fungi. It is a written guide to using this amazing spalting fungus. Written using simple techniques I developed in my backyard, I'll show you exactly how to use this material to spalt huge fallen logs, transforming ordinary wood into stunning raw material for crafting using fungi without the use of toxic chemicals. Tools used for log inoculation include a chainsaw, a bucket of paintable wax and a paintbrush, and my spalting starters.

Known for creating deep red and blue color saturation in wood across its range of possible pigmentation effects, this spalting starter in this listing is the Scytalidium cuboideum fungus. It has been called the "Flaming Dragon fungus" for its stunning wood transformations. This wood spalting starter kit allows the wood worker to induce color pigmentation spalting in green wood and rehydrated wood.

Ready for use in average of 30 days, loaded with dust-like spores that grow into your wood and fill it with color using Scytalidium cuboideum fungi. Color your wood with natural and nontoxic fungi instead of chemical stains and paints! A unique and natural gift that honors the woodworker in your life.

Grows on green wood under the bark
Grows on bare lumber that has been soaked in water (30% or better moisture content recommended)
Grows on logs, planks, cut ends, bowl blanks, pen blanks, log slices, many wood types

To use, rub on or apply the wet sawdust and spore material over green wood or rehydrated bare wood. Just a little bit of contact with the material on green or hydrated lumber pieces goes a long way. Maintain moist, cool conditions where stored, and allow for some airflow over the wood surface - a plastic tote box with a lid is a great place to store your developing spalted wood creations!

To expand your spalting starter culture, add it to clean, damp sawdust and vermiculite mixture in a plastic tote box with a lid. In time and correct conditions the fungi will colonize the mixture, changing the color of the wet sawdust and growing more spores. Rub on or apply this colonized damp material to the surface of green wood (under bark layer) or to rehydrated lumber. Keep material and wood moist while allowing airflow.

A handful of wet spalting starter material can be used as a rough "paintbrush" to apply the spalting fungi exactly where you want it to grow on any hydrated wood. Dab the wood surface roughly with the wet sawdust material, and spores are left behind on the surface of your wood to grow and penetrate and transform your wood pieces into spalted wood. When done using the spalting starter, just toss the remaining spalting starter material in a lidded plastic tote box with some more wet sawdust and it'll stay happy until the next time you need it.

Store from 50 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, warmer temperatures allow faster pigmentation development. Green wood and rehydrated lumber that comes into contact with this material will colonize in time and an incredible transformation from plain wood into spalted wood will occur. Rehydrated wood should contain 30% moisture content for ideal growth. Inoculated wood that is stored outside should be fully shaded, kept cool, and occasionally watered thoroughly for best spalting results.

Keep inoculated wood out of heat and extreme cold, and maintain dampness. This product contains sawdust and natural spores from the forest, N-95 mask and glove protection recommended while working with this fungi which is naturally non-toxic. Not for use by immunocompromised individuals.
